Student Associations

Join a Dutch studentenvereniging for sports, socials or your study field.

In short

Dutch student associations (studentenverenigingen) are social, sports or study-focused clubs, joining one is a common way to build a social circle, not a requirement of student life.

What they actually are

Unlike US-style fraternities and sororities, Dutch student associations are typically open, non-residential social, sports or interest clubs. Many are tied to a specific city or institution, and membership fees usually fund shared activities and sometimes a clubhouse (sociëteit).

Types you'll encounter

  • General student associations, broad social membership, often the largest in a city.
  • Sports associations, built around a specific sport or activity.
  • Study or faculty associations tied to your own programme.
  • International student associations, often the easiest entry point if you're arriving from abroad.

Joining safely

  • Attend an introduction or open week (kennismakingsweek) before committing to anything.
  • Ask current members directly about initiation practices and your right to opt out.
  • Check membership fees and exactly what they cover before you pay.
  • Remember joining any association is entirely optional, plenty of students build a social life without one.
