Choosing how to study in the Netherlands starts with picking between a research university (WO) or a university of applied sciences (HBO), then matching a specific programme to your goals.
WO or HBO?
Research universities (WO) focus on academic, theory-led education and are the usual route into research or further academic study. Universities of applied sciences (HBO) focus on practical, professionally oriented training with more work placements. Neither is objectively "better", the right choice depends on whether you prefer theory-first or practice-first learning.
How to shortlist a programme
- Check the programme is accredited in the Dutch CROHO register before applying.
- Compare the language of instruction, many programmes are fully in English, but not all.
- Look at graduate outcomes and whether the programme leads where you want to go next.
Before you apply
- Confirm the English (or Dutch) proficiency test your programme requires, such as IELTS or TOEFL.
- Check whether the programme uses numerus fixus (capped, selective admission), these often close earlier.
- Application deadlines are set by each institution individually, not nationally, so check the specific programme page.
