Residence permits, MVV basics and document order.
In short
Whether you need a visa (MVV) and/or a residence permit depends on your nationality and how long you'll stay, EU/EEA/Swiss citizens need neither, most other nationalities need both, usually arranged through your institution.
Who needs what
- EU/EEA/Swiss nationals, no visa or residence permit needed; just register locally after you arrive.
- Most non-EU/EEA nationals, need an MVV (entry visa) and a residence permit, usually applied for by your institution as a recognised sponsor.
- Some nationalities can enter visa-free but still need a residence permit for stays over 90 days, check your specific case.
The institution-sponsored route
Most Dutch universities are recognised IND sponsors and will submit the residence permit application on your behalf once you've accepted your offer. Confirm this directly with your admissions office rather than assuming it's automatic.
Before you travel
- Don't book irreversible travel until your MVV or permit is confirmed.
- Bring original documents, not just copies, to collect your residence permit card.
- Know your permit's validity period and renewal conditions before it becomes urgent.
